CHIHUAHUITA
In South El Paso, next to the Rio Grande, is the little community of Chihuahuita, which dates back more than 150 years. It has a lengthy history that dates back to the Mexican-American War in 1848, when El Paso joined the United States.
A large number of the migrants who fled the Mexican Revolution, that started in 1910, settled in Chihuahuita. It kept expanding as a route to El Paso after the revolution. During that time, it developed into an overpopulated, neglected region plagued by housing and health issues. Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, attempts were made to clean up and restore the historic area. Because of its lengthy and important history, the City of El Paso designated Chihuahuita as a historic district in 1991.
